Our History
On October 26, 2012, in the Magallanes Region of Chile, Patagonia Compassion was founded— a Christian humanitarian aid organization working in the heart of Kenya, Africa. Over the years, Patagonia Compassion has carried out consistent and committed work, mobilizing more than 70 volunteers who, with compassionate hearts and willing hands, have dedicated a period of their lives to serve in these distant lands. Our work has been focused in the village of Kaiani, Makueni County, a rural community with high levels of vulnerability, where people long for support that can provide opportunities and a hopeful future. For this reason, our purpose as an organization is “Transforming Lives and Changing Realities.” We dream of making a holistic contribution to people’s lives— not only through humanitarian aid, but also by supporting emotional and spiritual development. Eight years ago, with the support of the broader community, Christian organizations, companies, friends, and families, we were able to acquire a 3-hectare property. In the years that followed, volunteer teams worked tirelessly to clean and prepare the land. This effort made it possible, between 2019 and 2021, to build the first 240 m² multipurpose facility, aimed at providing training and development opportunities for the local population. During this same period, we became part of the Makutano water community, allowing us access to water— although irregular due to drought conditions. Despite this, it has been a meaningful contribution, as through the purchase of donkeys and water containers we have been able to supply this precious resource to the community. In parallel, we have sponsored Brayan and Cheryl for nearly ten years. Thanks to this support, Brayan has graduated from university with a degree in Social Work, and Cheryl has completed her secondary education. We are deeply grateful to have contributed for several consecutive years through medical and dental assistance, school reconstruction, provision of uniforms and school supplies, scouting equipment, food support, and recreational, academic, and community activities— particularly in collaboration with Kaiani School. The community where we serve is among those most affected by food insecurity, a situation that has worsened due to a prolonged and severe drought. In 2021, a major milestone marked our history as an organization. Patagonia Compassion was awarded a project funded by the Government of Chile, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chilean Agency for International Development Cooperation (AGCID), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Chile). This project enabled us to train 300 women over the course of one year in agricultural entrepreneurship, leading to the creation of the Makueni Agricultural Community Center. The project was carried out with the direct collaboration of key partners, including Global Light, AIEP, NISSI, Observa Ciudadanía, and the Embassy of Chile in Kenya. A sustainability plan was developed to ensure the continuity of the project. This plan was formally signed by Patagonia Compassion and the leadership of the community center. As a result, we now have a 650 m² agricultural space where women continue to plant, harvest, and sell their produce— generating income and meeting their families’ nutritional needs. Today, Paulina Vega serves as Resident Director of our facilities in Kaiani, working alongside local leaders to manage and guide the project. Throughout these years, God has been faithful. He has guided us with His word, encouraged and corrected us, and above all, challenged us to trust that this dream comes from His heart and that He goes before us. What We Are Doing Today At Patagonia Compassion, we work for the holistic development of our community, promoting spiritual, economic, and social growth. We currently support more than 50 women in agricultural initiatives, along with a poultry project, savings programs, and regular community visits. Our impact extends to women, their families, and young people, as we create economic opportunities and strengthen autonomy— with the vision of being a genuine and sustainable support for the entire community, without creating dependency.
